McKenzie Lockhart
McKenzie Lockhart
Born and raised in the revered city of Muscle Shoals, AL, McKenzie Lockhart has finally come to understand the value of home. Her forthcoming EP Suburbs (self-released) tells the story of someone who fought her way out of a small town, only to realize it was where she was meant to be all along. Recorded in her home in the neighboring city of Florence, AL, and produced by her husband, this collection of songs is a celebration of her origins.

“Easy” is a stand-out track, showcasing Lockhart’s vocal control and heartfelt lyricism. Lyrics such as “Loving you is waiting / loving you is easy,” convey the sentiment of even the difficult things being easy when you have the right partner. “For me, ‘Easy’ is an intentional celebration of the reality that life is truly great alongside someone you love,” says Lockhart. “Spent” displays versatility and light-heartedness as Lockhart’s own attempt to imitate the classic country style. Featuring Andy Baxter (Penny & Sparrow) is a nod to the unique nature of Muscle Shoals, where musical heroes can often become one’s personal friends. “Andy Baxter, my husband Payton, and I decided to record a couple of cover songs just for fun in the summer of 2017. Andy and I did Porter and Dolly’s ‘Just Someone I Used to Know,’ and were total geeks about it. Had the best time. I figured it would be fun to have him sing on this track after that experience.” The fun of “Spent” contrasts sharply with “Cynical Heart,” a deeply personal reflection on faith and relationships. Such reflection is often difficult, a sentiment which is not unfamiliar to Lockhart as she sings, “I know I’m not right / I’d like to be happy.” However, healing can be found in vulnerability, and “Cynical Heart” is an attempt at that very thing.

Suburbs is the perfect example of Lockhart’s approachable nature being translated into song. Simplicity and honesty work together in her writing to create songs that make you stop and listen, evident in both her recordings and live performances. In sharing the stage with artists such as John Paul White and Ellie Holcomb, Lockhart never fails to bring a room to pin-drop silence. Suburbs harnesses the strength in quiet, all while telling a story of coming to terms with, and even honoring, unexpected outcomes.
