Acclaimed NYC-based drummer and vocalist KASSA OVERALL will be hitting the road to premiere music from his forthcoming debut project "The Blue Album" and to perform material from his much buzzed-about release "Drake It Till You Make It”, which premiered last month on Okayplayer. “[His] commitment to fusing jazz and hip-hop aligns him with the likes of Robert Glasper, but with a bit of syncopated J Dilla-electro flair,” wrote Okayplayer. Overall's forthcoming album showcases his dazzling musical breadth, and features contributions from some of the finest names in jazz including Roy Hargrove, Jon Batiste, Aaron Parks, Sullivan Fortner, Carmen Lundy, and Theo Croker. This project features Overall in a number of roles, including drummer, producer, and vocalist. Overall himself describes the effort as geared towards “thinking listeners who feel conflicted about loving Drake but also need something with sonic depth and creativity.”

Overall’s recent releases reflect his wide-ranging talents; while percussion is his main focus, Overall has a passion for electronic-based production and often incorporates the use of laptops and samplers into his music. He’s performed with a formidable list of artists, including Christian McBride, Donald Byrd, Vijay Iyer, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Terri Lyne Carrington, Francis & the Lights, Yoko Ono, Marc Ribot, Mayer Hawthorne, Wallace Roney, Ravi Coltrane, Gary Bartz, and many more. He spent several years as a key member of pianist Geri Allen's Timeline band and appears regularly with trumpeter Theo Croker (whose last album he co-produced) and singer Carmen Lundy. As a rapper and producer, Overall has collaborated with the hip-hop outfit Das Racist, and is a member of the duo Kool & Kass with former Das Racist member Kool A.D. He also DJs on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert's house band, Jon Batiste & Stay Human.
In the past year, Overall has headlined shows around New York at venues including the Blue Note NYC, Smalls, the Jazz Gallery, Minton’s, and NuBlu. He has a monthly gig hosting the Revive Music Blue After Dark session at the Zinc Bar. He performs regularly at the Black Cat in San Francisco. Last year, he was invited for a two-night residency at the Sant Anna Aressi festival in Sardinia, Italy. He has recently given master classes at Stanford University and at his alma mater, Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he studied with Billy Hart.

"Overall is a Renaissance man: part chops, super-funky jazz drummer, and part rising producer-MC” -Time Out NY

"...[a] remarkable, articulate player with a diverse résumé across jazz, hip-hop and indie rock." -New York Times

"Overall, Overall’s music bridges Coltrane-esque spiritual-quest jazz, Brainfeeder Records’ trendsetting cosmic beat science, Shabazz Palaces’ Afrofuturist art rap and his own special brand of unpredictable, alluring weirdness. It’s all impeccably cool and endlessly compelling. The man excels not only in technical ability but in that rarer, perhaps more important realm of taste. He’s one of those people who’s not only good at everything he does but is often the only one doing the thing he’s doing." -Jonathan Zwickel, City Arts Magazine

“He’s the sort of musician who can work with Geri Allen and Das Racist in the same week, and do it well.” – WTRI

"[Kassa's] studio session was a fine example of the future of jazz - really, the future of modern music." -- Abe Beeson, KNKX
