Youth in a Roman Field
Youth in a Roman Field
Youth in a Roman Field wants to help you break the rules. The bastardized string quartet-meets folk band-meets jazz combo from singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Claire Wellin incorporates sounds of "Appalachia, cayenne pepper, & ghosts." The band includes collaborators Tiffany Topol, Scott Stangland, Cassidy Stirtz, Katrina Lenk, and Jamie Mohamdein. Their debut album, 'Of Grit and Grace,' was released in May of 2012, and the EP 'Suits for Children' was released in October 2014. Originally out of Chicago, they are currently making a home in New York City and will release their second full-length record April 20.

Claire brings a solo version of the band across the country this Spring, weaving string loops with soaring violin melodies and powerful vocals. Part singer-songwriter, part solo-chamber orchestra, the show offers an intimate translation of the inventive songs on the band’s upcoming record, Storm Conductor.

"Listening to Youth in a Roman Field, it's not hard to imagine the band in a shady glade singing its timeless, melancholy folk — the accordion makes the fantasy list toward the french countryside. The songs are clear, simple, a little sad and swept with romance. Frontwoman and bandleader Claire Wellin has a clarion voice that goes from naive to soulful, on songs that touch on belle époque cabaret music and early American folk music." -Jessica Hopper, Chicago Tribune

“Idiosyncratically accessible artistry- a stylistic intersectionality incorporating folk, jazz and classical influences informs Wellin’s take on singer-songwriter vulnerability with a type of understated theatricality that makes Youth in a Roman Field an original presence loaded with potential.” -Jamie Lee Rake, Milwaukee Shephard Express

“Claire Wellin engrosses with her delicate ebb and flow of strings and vocals before erupting into a spirited cascade of harmonies over a rich instrumental tapestry.”

“There are some performers who seem born to command a stage. That’s how it is with Brad Cole. His voice has a sharp, unerring, laser like quality, homing in on those uneasy truths most of us evade.” - Richard Cuccaro (Acoustic Live)

"Lay It Down masterfully takes listeners from the familiar spaces of reflective, lyric-driven folk music to the expansive reaches of Bossa nova jazz. It’s a beautiful album.” - No Depression

The songs of Brad Cole address the ups and downs of the human condition with both wit and raw insight. His passionate and distinctive delivery of roots-based folk music, woven with the grit and groove of old school bossa and rhythm & blues moves the listener’s soul in a direction that is unexpected, yet perfectly familiar.
